WTF

Thierry Henry is going to play for Barca?!?!?!

I disapprove heartily. At least it's not effing Viera or some other attitude-ridden tool. Henry is sort of sweet, if objectionable for his Arsenal-ness. And he's French?

Honestly ok?

"I just want to feel safe in my own skin,
I just want to be happy again
I just want to feel deep in my own world
But I'm so lonely
I don't even want to be with myself anymore
On a different day,
if I was safe in my own skin,
then I wouldn't feel lost and
so frightened
But this is today and I'm lost in my own skin
And I'm so lonely
I don't even want to be with myself anymore
I just want to feel safe in my own skin,
I just want to be happy again."

Cheers to a great start to the semester.

Yeats = Brilliant

But oh, that I were young again
And held her in my arms.
- W.B. Yeats

These lines still make me shiver.

Odi et amo

"Odi et amo. quare id faciam, fortasse requiris.
nescio, sed fieri sentio et excrucior.

I hate and I love. Why? you might ask.
I don't know. But I feel it happening and I hurt."

(Catullus 85, translation Anne Carson)

Fire, fire!

So, my housemate just put a baked potato in the microwave for nine minutes--yup, nine minutes. It burned (obviously) and then our entire downstairs filled with smoke...all without a single smoke alarm going off.

I feel so incredibly safe.

Grammar Police

Dear Facebook,

Do you think that Facebook could make a greater effort to be grammatically correct?

For example, "Brooke edited Profile Picture in their profile" is completely incorrect. Correct would read: "Brooke edited his or her profile."

"Their" is a plural pronoun designed to refer to a plural noun; "Brooke," being a singular noun, requires a single pronoun. Because "Brooke" is a gendered entity (and not a non-gendered object), the pronouns of choice are "his" or "her." You can combine these to accommodate both genders (but not those who are not hetero-normative) by writing "his or her."

Why not take a fearless leap and fix this error?

Love,
The Grammar Police

ps "X number of people edited their profile" is incorrect too. "Their profile" implies a collective profile--quite a novel concept, but not quite what's actually happening.

Penalties

Suck. It really does, when good football comes down to penalties.

Wow!

Eta declares a ceasefire! This is amazing and consistent with the idea of a more moderate nationalist sentiment emerging from the Basques in general. Seriously, this is so incredible. Here's what BBC has to say about it:

Obsessions

English muffins are amazing. They are good with just butter. They are tasty with jam. They are most especially delicious when done up in butter, sugar and cinnamin or peanut butter and tart rasberry jam. They are my new obsession in life. I find myself so indecisive that at times I must eat one English muffin with each half done differently, and I adore both halves and the whole happiness that is an English muffin.

Amen.

All Freshly-Snowed upon Things Considered

Despite a headache and a caffiene lust, impending packing and first impressions, I am PSYCHED because for the first time in FOUR years (plus a few months of procrastination) I finally have a license photo that is not heinous! I would actually show this one in a bar, which is useful with the newly-acquired 21 status.

Welcome Back, Obies!

New housing is nicer than my house at home. If only the oven worked, the lights work in a non-arbitrary manner, we had hot water in fewer than 20 minutes of letting the water run, and the screens and electric socket covers were installed.

Meanwhile, my politics professor is a British Edward Norton plus 15 years. Perhaps he's a Chelsea fan?

In the past 15 minutes, I have overheard no fewer than four conversations about smoking/types of cigarettes.

Clearly, I must be back.

Dress For Success

Anyone have any thoughts of how I can simultaneously impress Colin's coworkers, look sexy and professional, and be comfortable at a black tie event?

All thoughts welcome.

Triumphant Accomplishments

Computer revelations:

For Kt: understanding how to make a line break in html

For Colin: redesigning entire computer, as far as I can see. something about reinstalling linnex and adding a cute background and transparent tabs. It looks hot.

Also hot:

Chelsea beating Arsenal and thwarting poor Arsene Wenger's attempts to win at his 500th game as boss of Arsenal. It's so sad... I need Arthur here so I can discuss football. ::harumph:: It is clearly time to return to Oberlin.

Happiness

Taking a stroll around a pond around the sunset, post-sunset time; high heels that fit well enough to let me do that; a happily bouncing puppy; yummy Turkish food filling my tummy; and the sweetest boy ever holding my hand.

This is how I fall asleep with a smile.
